4. The Apiary Continued ...

Updated: Jun 26, 2020

This weekend we really cracked on.

On Saturday Greg actually took me out of the village and let me have a run around in a garden center! I think it's the first time I've left the village, other than to go to work, (I'm a teacher) since lockdown began. As you can imagine, I was very excited!

Oops!
Ready for planting out!

Today we visited the apiary and I planted out those we'd got: Antirhynum, Cotton Lavender, Alysum, Rosemary, Echinacea, Iris, hollyhocks, Borrage, Blackberry, Oriental Poppies, Chives ~ all kinds of plants that bees love.

The aim is to have wildflowers in and amongst these in an attempt to enable the bees to have sustenance all year round, not just in the spring/summer. That will be an ongoing project - more to come.

After that, Greg and his dad bashed in some posts with a fence basher Greg secured from ebay for 15 quid and we all pitched in securing the chicken wire to make it clear that you shouldn't enter. We're going to get a sign saying 'beware of the bees' or some such.

All in all we're really happy with how the apiary is coming together ~ much better than we anticipated.

Still to do: secure delivery of wood chippings for the center of the apiary, seat flags securely, finish bee stand, take delivery of bee livestock in mid-July. All that to come!

Watch this space!
